  • Prepare and interpret financial records for a business while applying generally accepted accounting principles and industry standards.
  • Identify and explain common internal controls necessary in business organizations.
  • Use computerized accounting software.
  • Communicate professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Compute payrolls and prepare basic federal and state payroll tax forms.
  • Prepare basic income tax returns for individuals and businesses.
  • Analyze the legal, ethical and practical implications of business decisions.
  • Work in a variety of industries, including healthcare, retail, manufacturing, government and not-for-profit.

Career Opportunities

The skills developed in this program are useful in every type of organization that wants to create and maintain an effective and efficient workplace. Associate-level accountants are prepared to work in a variety of industries, including healthcare, retail, manufacturing, government and not-for-profit. The positions can focus on specialized accounting skills like tax preparation or be part of the overall administrative support function of an organization that includes accounting and bookkeeping responsibilities. At the associate degree level, there are no licensing requirements or additional certifications required to work in most areas of accounting.

Accounting Program Assessment Plan: Program director will submit annual reports in May using program summary document and assessment spreadsheet.
