Why Pursue Substance Abuse & Addictions Counseling?

The Substance Abuse and Addictions Counseling program is an excellent pathway if you are looking to enter the field of addictions counseling. It focuses on developing therapeutic skills to support individuals in recovery from substance abuse and prevent relapse and provides the courses required for licensure as an addictions counselor in the state of Montana.

Graduates are prepared to:

  • Enter the drug and alcohol counseling profession.
  • Provide therapeutic services including individual and group counseling for individuals dealing with substance abuse.
  • Complete psychosocial assessments following American Society of Addiction Medicine criteria
  • Conduct continued stay reviews and participate in treatment planning.
  • Help individuals maintain recovery from substance abuse and prevent relapse from substance abuse.
  • Fulfill the preparatory coursework required to become a licensed addictions counselor.
  • Transfer to various four-year programs for further education in the mental health and substance abuse treatment fields.

If you already have a bachelor's or advanced degree in a related field, Great Falls College's Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS) in Addictions Counseling may be the perfect fit for you. Meets montana board of behavioral health requirements for licensure. Can be completed in one year if attending full-time. Flexible learning options: onsite, live online or online.
