GREAT FALLS – Great Falls College MSU is kicking off its music season with two exciting performances – flutist Nicole Riner on Sunday, Sept. 18 and Celtic trio Cry of the Deer on Friday, Sept. 23.
Both concerts are free and open to the public. Both will be held in Heritage Hall at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Ave. S.
Praised for her “luscious, full sound” (American Record Guide) and “effortless precision” (Flutist Quarterly), Nicole Riner maintains an active national presence as a recitalist and pedagogue. She has presented master classes at universities and conservatories across the country and has performed as a guest artist at summer festivals, chamber music series, and flute festivals in the United States, South America, and Europe. Riner currently teaches at University of Wyoming, where she is a lecturer in flute and founder/ director of the Summit Flute Institute. She also serves as faculty at the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival in Bavaria every August. Riner’s dissertation, “The Girls in the Band: Women’s Perspectives on Gender Stereotyping in the Music Classroom,” has been presented at national conferences in Colorado, Wyoming, and Hawaii and has been published in the online magazine GEMS (Gender, Education, and Music Studies).
Riner’s Masterclass/Performance is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18 from 7-8 p.m. A reception will follow. The concert is free to the public with a suggested $5 donation.
Cry of the Deer will perform Friday, Sept. 23 from 7-8:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. The performance is free to the public, and donations are graciously accepted.
Cry of the Deer is comprised of musicians Peter and Molly Wilson, and Lonnie Baker. They play a variety of traditional music from the British Isles. Lonnie Baker lends his expertise with Celtic harp, penny whistle and Scotch-Irish song. Peter Wilson plays the accordion, piano and bodhran, and Molly Wilson joins in with violin and voice. Cry of the Deer will perform a range of Celtic music from lively dance tunes to beautiful ballads.
