GREAT FALLS —Twenty-two military veterans will begin, or solidify, their careers as farmers during a training program called Armed to Farm that helps veterans develop their business plan for a sustainable farming operation.
Armed to Farm will take place Aug. 29 through Sept. 2 at Great Falls College MSU, located at 2100 16th Avenue South.
The Armed to Farm program offers a dynamic blend of farm tours and hands-on experience with classroom instruction. Each participating veteran will develop skills in business planning, budgeting, record-keeping, marketing, livestock production, vegetable production, small grain production and more. The goal of the program is to give participants a strong foundation of the basic principles of operating a sustainable farming enterprise.
“The focus is with those veterans who are beyond the initial exploring stage of farming and own their own land or have a start on their business plan. We will focus on business planning and enterprise selection for the classes as well as visit farms that are successfully farming in the Great Falls area,” said Tammy Howard, agriculture specialist with the National Center for Appropriate Technology.
Instructors for the Armed to Farm program will include staff from the USDA, GFC MSU faculty, experts in small business management and financing, and experienced crop and livestock producers.
Armed to Farm is organized by the National Center for Appropriate Technology.
