GREAT FALLS COLLEGE MSU HOSTS MONTANA REGION II SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR

Great Falls — Great Falls College MSU is hosting the Region II Science and Engineering Fair on Wednesday, March 16, and Thursday, March 17.

On March 16, 250 to 300 middle school and high school students will display their science fair projects. The following day will feature projects by elementary school students. Region II includes schools in Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Teton, Pondera, Cascade, and Judith Basin counties.

Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney will be in attendance March 16 and will present awards during the award ceremony from 3-4 p.m.

From 2-3 p.m. on March 16, guest speaker Shane Mayer-Gawlik will discuss the Eclipse Ballooning project. Part of the Montana Space Grant Consortium, students across the country will conduct high altitude balloon flights during the total solar eclipse that will occur on Aug. 21, 2017, in order to capture video and images from the eclipse path.

“We are excited to host this event that gets area students excited about science and engineering fields,” said Leanne Frost, Director of General Education, Business, Technology and Transfer Division at Great Falls College MSU. “This is a great opportunity for students of all ages to show off their enthusiasm for science.”

On March 16, the Science and Engineering Fair begins at 8 a.m., with the first round of judging running until 11:30 a.m. Merit awards will be given at 12:15 p.m., followed by the second round of judging from 12:30-2 p.m.

The elementary science fair on March 17 runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both events will be held at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Avenue South in Great Falls.

Judges are still needed for both days. Judges include volunteer faculty, staff and students from GFC MSU, as well as members of the Red Horse Squadron and community. To volunteer to judge, contact Marlena Szabo at (406)268-3705.
