Purpose

The purpose of the Safety Committee is to provide education and training to reduce the incidence of occupational injury and illness among employees. The committee promotes safety in the workplace to promote a safer working environment for all employees and to control the costs of claims for workers’ compensation insurance.

Areas of responsibility

  • Assessing and controlling hazards
  • Assessing safety training and awareness topics
  • Communication with employees regarding safety committee activities
  • Developing safety rules, policies and procedures
  • Educating employees on safety related topics
  • Evaluating the safety program on a regular basis
  • Inspecting the workplace
  • Keeping job specific training current
  • Motivating employees to create a safety culture in the workplace
  • Reviewing incidents of workplace accidents, injuries and illnesses

Establish a formal Safety Committee to promote a safe and healthful environment in alignment with Montana University System (MUS) policies, Montana Code Annotated (MCA), and OSHA standards, by providing oversight for campus safety programs including laboratories, facilities and administrative areas.
